What is a ewp / boom lift annual service procedure?
An annual EWP service is a manufacturer-defined preventive maintenance event. Its exact scope and any hour trigger vary by make, model, power type, use and environment; a generic checklist must be adapted to the manufacturer manual. Filters, lubrication, structural observations, safety-device checks, electrical work and wear measurements should only be included when specified and performed by people competent for those tasks.
The periodic inspection is a separate safety assessment. Safe Work Australia guidance says it is based on usage subject to a maximum period, typically one year, and must occur at least annually unless the manufacturer or a competent person recommends otherwise. A service provider may coordinate both scopes, but the records should distinguish maintenance completed from inspection findings and sign-off. Any identified safety issue must be rectified before the EWP returns to service.

- Replace the hydraulic return filter. For diesel models, also replace the fuel filter and air filter.: Use genuine or OEM-equivalent filters rated for the machine. Pre-fill fuel filters to avoid air locks during start-up. Inspect the air filter housing for cracks or seal damage before fitting the new element.
- Perform a structural inspection of all boom sections, checking for cracks, deformation and corrosion. Inspect the turntable and chassis. Perform non-destructive testing of critical welds if due per the manufacturer schedule or 10-year NDT cycle.: Visually inspect all boom sections with the boom extended. Look for paint cracking that may indicate underlying fatigue cracks, dents, deformation or surface corrosion. NDT methods include magnetic particle inspection or ultrasonic testing on critical welds at boom pivot points and turntable mounting.
- Inspect, test or calibrate the load moment indicator and overload protection exactly as specified by the manufacturer.: Use the manufacturer procedure, specified test equipment and acceptance criteria. Record the test method, equipment identification, readings, result and the competent person who performed the work. Do not infer a generic test load from this template.
- Complete the manufacturer-specified electrical inspection and testing.: A competent person should select the test method and voltage for the machine and components. Inspect wiring, connectors and contactors for damage, contamination, heat and correct operation, then record the results and any corrective work.
- Measure and record boom pin and bush wear. Compare measurements to manufacturer limits and replace if worn beyond tolerance. Inspect cylinder rod condition for scoring and pitting. Inspect wire ropes or chains if fitted.: Use a vernier calliper or bore gauge to measure pin diameter and bush internal diameter at each boom pivot point. Calculate the total clearance and compare to the manufacturer maximum, typically 1 to 2 mm. Inspect cylinder rods for chrome damage, scoring or pitting that could cause seal failure.
- Complete and record the separate periodic inspection scope.: The competent person should inspect the items required by the manufacturer or inspection plan, document findings and corrective actions, and provide a written report with machine identity, hour reading, inspection type, qualifications and next due date.
- Test function speed and smoothness at full reach. Record any defects or recommendations in the notes section.: Extend the boom to maximum reach and test all functions (boom up, down, telescope, rotate, drive) for smooth and consistent speed. Jerky or slow operation may indicate hydraulic valve wear, contaminated oil or air in the system.
- Set the next service due hours (next quarterly and annual). Sign off and update the machine's maintenance log.: Set the next service from the manufacturer calendar and hour intervals, adjusted for use and conditions where required. Record the next periodic inspection separately. Capture the name and competence details of each person responsible for the completed work.

Separately, routine inspections should normally occur at intervals no longer than three months and periodic inspections at least annually unless the manufacturer or a competent person recommends otherwise.
