What is a warehouse safety inspection checklist?
A warehouse safety inspection checklist is a single form used to walk a warehouse and record whether its racking, mobile equipment, housekeeping, exits, manual handling arrangements and dangerous goods storage are safe and compliant. It covers pallet racking and shelving, forklifts and other materials handling equipment, aisles and pedestrian separation, emergency exits and lighting, loading docks, manual handling aids, and the storage and labelling of dangerous goods. For each item the inspector records whether it passes, fails or is not applicable, plus any defect and the action needed, creating a dated record of the warehouse's safety condition.
A warehouse concentrates several of the highest-risk activities in one place: heavy loads stored at height on racking, powered mobile plant moving among people, and often chemicals or dangerous goods. Routine inspection is how those risks are kept controlled between incidents. Pallet racking should be inspected in line with AS 4084.2:2023, the operation and maintenance part of the steel storage racking standard (design sits in AS 4084.1:2023), and the whole operation sits under the model Work Health and Safety laws in your state or territory (in Victoria, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and OHS Regulations 2017), which impose duties around plant, traffic management, manual handling and hazardous chemicals. A documented inspection trail demonstrates that these duties are being met and gives the warehouse a record to act on, rather than relying on someone noticing damage in passing.

Benefits of using this warehouse safety inspection checklist
- Catch racking damage early: a regular check of uprights, beams and footplates finds impact damage before an overloaded or weakened rack can collapse.
- Safer traffic interactions: inspecting aisle marking, pedestrian separation and forklift operation reduces the risk of the most serious warehouse incidents.
- Compliance evidence: a dated inspection trail supports plant, traffic and hazardous chemical duties under the model WHS laws in your state or territory.
- Housekeeping under control: recurring checks on aisles, spills and stacking keep the floor clear and stop small hazards accumulating into big ones.
- Dangerous goods managed: confirming storage, segregation, labelling and safety data sheets keeps chemical risks controlled and audit ready.
- Clear accountability: an inspector, a date and a defect owner on every walk means hazards are actioned rather than noticed and forgotten.

What to include in a warehouse safety inspection checklist
This warehouse safety inspection checklist covers 10 key areas:
- Inspection details: warehouse or site, inspector, date and areas covered
- Pallet racking: uprights, beams, footplates, bracing, load signs and damage
- Shelving and storage: stability, load limits, stacking height and condition
- Forklifts and MHE: pre-start records, operator licences, condition and charging area
- Traffic and pedestrians: marked aisles, separation, crossings and speed controls
- Housekeeping: clear aisles, no spills, tidy stacking and waste managed
- Emergency egress: exits clear, doors operating, exit and emergency lighting
- Manual handling: trolleys, hoists and aids available and in good order
- Dangerous goods: storage, segregation, labelling, spill kit and safety data sheets
- Defects list with priority, owner and target date, plus inspector sign-off
How to use this warehouse safety inspection checklist
- Review previous defects first: Before walking, check the last inspection and any open defects, particularly on racking, so you can confirm repairs have been done. Damaged racking that was flagged and never fixed is a common finding, so closing that loop is one of the most valuable parts of the inspection.
- Inspect the racking systematically: Walk each run of racking and check uprights and beams for impact damage, footplates for anchoring, safety pins and bracing, and that load limit signs are displayed. Any upright with a dent or bend beyond the tolerance in AS 4084.2:2023 should be isolated and off-loaded until assessed, because a compromised upright can trigger a progressive collapse.
- Check mobile plant and traffic: Confirm forklifts and other MHE have current pre-start records and licensed operators, and inspect the condition of the equipment and the charging or refuelling area. Check that pedestrian and vehicle areas are separated, aisles are marked and clear, and crossings and speed controls are in place and working.
- Assess housekeeping, egress and manual handling: Look for blocked aisles, spills, poor stacking and accumulated waste, and confirm emergency exits are clear, doors operate and exit and emergency lighting works. Check that mechanical aids for manual handling are available and in good order so heavy or awkward loads are not being lifted by hand unnecessarily.
- Verify dangerous goods and log defects: Confirm dangerous goods are stored, segregated and labelled correctly, with spill kits and current safety data sheets available. Record every defect with a description, a priority, an owner and a target date, file the inspection against the site, and raise work orders for the fixes rather than leaving them on the sheet.

Run a general warehouse safety inspection on a regular cycle, commonly monthly, with daily pre-start checks on forklifts and other mobile plant before use. High-throughput sites, or those handling dangerous goods, warrant more frequent walks.
Pallet racking has its own regime: operators should do frequent visual checks for damage, and AS 4084.2:2023 provides for a documented rack inspection by a competent person at least every twelve months, or more often in high-impact environments. Align the general inspection with these racking and plant cycles, and review the open defects list each time so hazards are closed out rather than simply re-recorded from one walk to the next.
